Pure White Gallery

One way of measuring the economic status of a city is by their buildings. The latest are the reflection of cities development, they evolve and decline along with the urban fabric. In times of economic downturns, large-scale historical buildings tend to be left vacant, waiting for a new function that will finish their emptiness while making them more appealing.

This project is located at No. 6 Victoria Street, a Grade II Historical Building listed by the British Heritage. Its internal floor dimensions and heights, makes this structure the perfect host for an Art Gallery. Pure White Gallery is composed of four main areas: two art spaces, one for sculptures and one for paintings, a shop, and a café.

The design proposal takes advantage of the existing big window openings, allowing people to have a glance of some paintings on the ground floor, or the gallery space on the first floor, while still on the street. The reception and café areas are designed to work as a buffer zone, where people can meet before accessing to the gallery space.

Interior spaces are designed to take advantage of natural light; window openings are controlled for the creation of different sensations throughout the project. Atmosphere changes from one room to another; the use of horizontal and vertical circulations, partition walls, and materiality helps to deliver a more flexible and compelling project for the user.

The MA Interior Architecture and Design is a multi-dimensional course which incorporates the understanding of interior, spatial and architectural design alongside an awareness of building structure.

The course is an intensive 53 week in length, and it is divided into three successive terms: Certificate, Diploma and Masters. The DIPLOMA SHOW is the conclusion of Term 2, launched in July 2021. At the end of Term 3 October 2021, the same students present their MASTERS SHOW before entering into industry or further studies.

The course has a very strong studio-based culture which is reflective of professional practice, with a combination of design and skills-based teaching and exploration with a strong focus on the spatial investigation, humancentric and holistic use of space.
